Orange Beach High School theater students compete and win at district competition

Posted

Orange Beach High School theater students competed at their first district Trumbauer Festival at Murphy High School in Mobile on Nov. 2.

Students performed a one act play written by their teacher Darren Butler titled ‘The Last Mile’ and won ‘Best One Act.’ They are the only One Act with a bid to state in the district. The back of the house also won recognition for Best Tech and Best Set.

In the individual events, half of the students earned excellent ratings and the other half advanced to State competition with Superior ratings.

“We overcame the odds to place first. I started the job as theater teacher at Orange Beach High School with only freshmen and sophomores. 96 percent of my troupe had little to no previous experience or training in acting or tech. We had no equipment, no stock flats or platforms, no costumes, no props - nothing. Generous grants from our Mako Foundation and the Orange Beach Education Foundation gave us the financial support we needed. But even with support, we had to work hard to build something from nothing.” Butler said in a Facebook post.

The students will now start preparing for the State Festival at Troy University in December.
