Major Paul F. Nieland, USMC (Ret), a long-time resident of Fairhope, died August 11, 2020 after fighting a long battle with cancer. After flying in the U.S. Marine Corps, he became interested in youth activities in the area, working as a coach and referee (and on rare occasion, a player) for the Eastern Shore Soccer Assn. and heading up the Dogwood pageant for many years. Paul is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Jacqueline Mueller of Mobile, AL. Also surviving him are his three children, Richard (Rick) Nieland (Jill) of The Woodlands, TX, Charles (Skip) Nieland (Angela) of Newland, NC and Christopher (Chris) Nieland (Kathy) of New Orleans, LA, as well as nine grandchildren, one great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Due to health concerns in today’s environment, the memorial service scheduled for Friday has been paired down to a private graveside service for the immediate family at Alabama State Veterans Cemetery.
