Pirates Luke Freer nails 59-yard field goal

FAIRHOPE, Ala. – With the visiting Hornets leading 10-7 and one second left on the first-half clock, Luke Freer’s 59-yard field-goal kick tied the score with air to spare – about 10 feet above the cross bar. The distance is now the second-longest in state high-school history by just two-yards.

The Pirates went on to defeat the Hornets 27-17. In all, Freer’s foot contributed nine points adding another field goal and three extra points. His punts of 52 and 55 yards helped Fairhope’s defense keep the Hornets in the hive. Also contributing to the offense, Glenn Patrick scored two rushing touchdowns and Qualin McCants one for the Pirates total.

Fairhope head coach Tim Carter said somebody at the college level should recruit his kicker quickly.

“He’s the best kicker in Alabama,” Carter said. “That’s all I know!”

The Pirates improved to 6-0 in Class 7A Region 1 play with their only loss at top-ranked Spanish Fort in the season opener. With the road win over Theodore last week and road wins at either Alma Bryant and/or Murphy, Fairhope can lock in the top spot of the final region standings. That will give them a home-field playoff advantage hosting the fourth seed in the first round.

“We have had great focus as a team and I’m just so proud of this group,” Carter said.

Fairhope travels to Irvington Oct. 22 to take on the Alma Bryant Hurricanes. Baker will host Daphne.
