SUMMERDALE, Alabama — A Summerdale School seventh grader has been charged with making a terroristic threat after posts on social media put the school in lockdown for several hours on Monday.
At 7:18 a.m. Monday, Sgt. John Gleaton with the Summerdale Police Department issued a statement that they “were notified of a credible threat to students at Summerdale School overnight last night. Posts on social media were made threatening to harm several students."
Posts were made on Instagram which referenced shooting and mentioned Summerdale Middle School. The school was placed in lockdown “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the release.
At noon on Monday, Gleaton issued a follow-up release stating Summerdale Police and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Unit jointly investigated the posts, identifying a seventh-grade student at the school as possibly being involved in making the posts.
The student was questioned and admitted to making the posts on Sunday, according to the release. Since the student lives outside Summerdale’s jurisdiction, the case was turned over to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.
“All indications from the investigation lead us to believe that there is no longer any danger to the school, students or the faculty,” according to the release.
According to a release issued just before 2 p.m. on Monday by Capt. Clint Cadenhead with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Command, the juvenile was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center in Bay Minette, charged with making a terroristic threat.
