Daphne’s Emilie Hunter wins state diving crown

AUBURN, Ala. — Daphne diver Emilie Hunter won the 2016 girls state title in the Class 6A-7A AHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Auburn University's Martin Aquatics Center. The sophomore posted a winning score of 306.25 over runner-up Julia Keller (295.70) of Huntsville and M'Kay Gidley of Hillcrest in third-place (268.10). The win keeps the individual girls championship in Baldwin County after Helen Legg of Fairhope, who graduated last spring won four straight AHSAA diving championships.

Opelika junior Connor Pruitt won the boys individual title with his third straight diving championship and established a new state record total of 532.90 points. Murphy’s Robert Raley held the old state record for five years.

Daphne's boys team finished sixth and the Daphne girls took eighth for co-top-10 honors. McGill-Toolen Catholic's girls were third behind winner Auburn High and runner-up Huntsville. Spanish Fort's girls were 13th and Fairhope was 19th.

Also on the boys side, McGill-Toolen was fourth behind winner Huntsville, runner-up Auburn and third-place James Clemens. Fairhope was 21st and Spanish Fort was 27th in the statewide field.

In Class 1A-5A Bayside's boys took 20th. St.Paul's Episcopal was the winner over No. 2 Randolph and Scottsboro in third. In the Girls 1A-5A division Westminster was the champion team followed by St. Paul's and Pope John Paul II Catholic.

Daphne’s boys were led to their top-10 spot with a third-place podium finish in the Boys 400-Yard Freestyle Relay by seniors Reagan Brey and Harrison Costantini, junior Jacob Lambert and freshman Trey Shiels.

The Trojans also got a fourth in the Boys 200-Yard Freestyle Relay with junior Ezra Woods, sophomore Will Robinson, Lambert and Shields in the lineup and took fifth in the Boys 200-Yard Medley Relay with senior Zach Harlan, Costantini, Robinson and Sheils.

Individually, Costantini finished fourth in the 200-Yard Freestyle and Robinson took fourth in the 100-Yard Backstroke.

The Daphne girls took fifth in the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay as juniors Karen Larsen and Mary Stewart along with sophomores Emme Smith and Olivia Smith swam the legs for DHS. Individually Olivia Smith reached the podium with a third-place in the 100-Yard Backstroke and took fifth in the Girls 100-Yard Butterfly. Stewart took fifth in the 100-Yard Backstroke and seventh in the 200-Yard IM.
