Town of Elberta amps up holiday giving

ELBERTA - As unbelievable as it is, the holidays are almost here. The Town of Elberta is working in advance to prepare for the holidays and to ensure that all local children don’t go without this holiday season.

At the Elberta Police Department, space was made to place the department’s Angel Tree, which went up mid-November. Angels have been placed on the tree prior to Thanksgiving.

“We asked for all the local angels, for everybody from our area,” said Police Chief Clif Roberts. “We don’t want any kids to go without, and we’re going to be out making sure that we get all of those angels adopted.” In 2019, all angels were adopted within three weeks, he said.

The police department isn’t the only place gearing up to spread holiday cheer. The Elberta High School Peer Helpers have been hard at work on the Deck The Halls Red Ribbon Project, which is looking to place as many Christmas shoeboxes in local children’s hands as possible. Each shoebox will contain personal items such as hairbrushes/combs, toothpaste/brush, and soap, one craft activity such as a coloring book, Legos/blocks, crayons, or card games, and one wow or toy item which could be a small toy, puzzles, balls, stuffed animals, dolls, or clothing.

Recently, the high school Peer Helpers held a Toy Drive at the Dollar General in Elberta, and with the help of the police department and the Dollar General staff, were able to fill up a police vehicle with donated items twice. The items were delivered to the high school where they will be placed in the shoeboxes.

“Our town is amazing, everyone came out in full-force,” said councilmember Vicky Helms Norris.

Those who would like to adopt an angel can do so by stopping by the Elberta Police Department. Those interested in helping fill Christmas shoeboxes for the Deck The Halls Red Ribbon Project can drop off donated items to the Elberta High School through Friday, Dec. 4, or make a cash donation towards the projects. The funds will be used by the Peer Helpers to purchase needed items for the shoeboxes. Make out any donations for the project to the Deck The Halls Red Ribbon Project at the high school. All shoeboxes will be delivered to Elberta Elementary and Middle School students the week before Christmas.
