An open letter to an unvaccinated friend:

You’ve decided not to get the vaccine. I can understand that. The vaccines are still relatively new, so they haven’t had time to go through the lengthy FDA review process. It makes sense to have concerns about possible long-term side effects.

But you’re not a fanatic. You’re not basing your health decisions on some wild conspiracy theory from the internet. You’re just being cautious, and you want to be sure you have good information before you make your decision.

Well, now you have some new information. Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen concrete evidence of how remarkably effective the vaccines are. Every anecdote from hospital workers and every statistic about the larger population is telling the same story: virtually all of the deaths from Covid, and the overwhelming majority of hospitalizations and ICU visits, are happening to unvaccinated people.

You’re worried about side effects of being vaccinated, and that’s understandable. But there are also side effects to being unvaccinated. If you’re unvaccinated, you’re about 100 times more likely to die of Covid. Over 200 Americans are dying every day from that side effect.

You’re a reasonable person. You’re capable of hearing new evidence and reevaluating your position. Now it’s time to weigh the hypothetical, theoretical risks of being vaccinated against the proven, fatal consequences of being unvaccinated.

Very truly yours,

Tim Drummond
