DAPHNE – A suspect was injured in an exchange of gunfire with a Daphne police officer Monday afternoon, police said.

The shooting took place near the Alligator Boardwalk near the intersection of Interstate 10 and U.S. 98. The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to reports from the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit, which is investigating the incident. The suspect was reported to be alert after being taken to the hospital.

At about 3 p.m., Daphne police were called to investigate the report of an armed person on the boardwalk. The officers found the person. During the incident, the suspect was shot.

No police or other first-responders were injured, Daphne Mayor Robin LeJeune said.

“Our officers are safe,” LeJeune told City Council members later Monday. “No one was injured as far as our officers were involved. The gentleman that was shot, my understanding is that the firemen did get him stable to where he could be Life flighted to Pensacola, so we do want to keep him in our prayers and we’re just thankful that our officers are good and safe and, like I said, for the firemen that did such as great job to help that situation.”

The Sheriff’s Office statement said that the investigation is still going on and no other information was available.

Traffic on U.S. 98 and other highways near the scene were backed up Monday afternoon while the investigation continued.
