Did you miss your chance to fly in an Army helicopter in June? You are in luck. The Friends of Army Aviation return to Orange Beach Aug. 18 – 19 with a UH-1H Iroquois, commonly known as the “Huey.”

The “Huey” was a multipurpose utility helicopter famous for its widespread use during the Vietnam War. The aircraft were primarily for troop and cargo transport, medical evacuations and aerial attacks. “Hueys” have also been used in civilian roles such as firefighting, humanitarian aid efforts, research operations and search and rescue duties.

The ride is one that will not be forgotten. The chance to fly over Orange Beach with the doors open as the helicopter banks and dives is a thrill.

“The important thing for people to realize is the maneuverability of the aircraft. If you think it is a ride you are going to get at Gulf Shores where you are flying in a little R-22, it is not like that. The only time you see that aircraft straight and level is when it is hovering. The rest of the time it is turning and banking and moving up and down. It’s a ride of a lifetime,” Retired Army Lt. Col. John “Doc” Holladay, president of the Friends of Army Aviation, explained.

The Friends of Army Aviation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to presenting the Army Aviation story to the American people through static displays of legacy Army aircraft and associated ride program. Their mission is to educate the public on the contributions Army Aviation has provided to the battlefield and support the families of soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice in support of freedom. The group also works to maintain, restore and preserve authentic legacy Army aircraft used in combat operations. The last and possibly one of the most important missions is to inspire young people to consider aviation as a career and to honor those soldiers serving, past and present.
