Warriors drop Monday-night heartbreaker to Rattlers at Ladd-Peebles

MOBILE, Ala. – Leading 41-40, the Warriors’ defense battled to the final seconds to keep the Rattlers from one last score. But LeFlore’s offense drove from their own six-yard line to score with 16 seconds on the fourth-quarter clock to retake the lead for the last time. The 15-yard touchdown run by LHS quarterback JaHiya Robinson was the eighth and final lead change of the night at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Elberta scored first on Jamal Woods’ 9-yard run and Hunter Alms’ first extra point to lead 7-0. Robinson thrn scored for LHS from the Elberta four and again on the two-point conversion try for the first Rattlers’ lead (8-7). LeFlore extended that to 16-7 on another Robinson score and the 2-point run before the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors closed the gap to 16-14 when Woods added a TD from the LHS 19. EHS then took the lead back on Woods’ third TD, a 2-yard dive. After the PAT kick hit the upright, the visitors took a 20-16 lead at halftime.

A Robinson TD run of eight yards and another 2-point conversion capped a short drive to open the third quarter and a 24-20 Rattler lead. The quick score was set up by a long kickoff return by De’Andre Pettway to the EH eight.

Elberta retook the lead 27-24 with another Woods’ touchdown, an 8-yard run to cap a 77-yard Warrior drive.

But LHS’ Pettway caught a TD pass from Robinson for a 32-27 Rattlers lead with 5:31 left in the third.  LeFlore extended the lead to 40-24 into the fourth quarter on a 7-yard run by Robinson and a Robinson-to-Pettway conversion pass. But the Warriors responded with 17 points to retake the lead 41-40.

EHS quarterback Brady Krueger passed to Travis Smyth for a 49-yard score and Krueger then scored on a 32-yard keeper to make it a 40-39 LHS lead. The Warriors then went for two and took the lead 41-40 on Krueger’s PAT pass to Jacob Hamill with 4:24 left.

But the Rattlers’ longest and most time-consuming drive of the night used all but 16 seconds of the clock to retake the lead and the win – their first of the season - to improve to 1-6 overall, 1-4 in region play.

The Warriors (3-4, 1-3) are set to host St. Paul’s Episcopal tonight. LeFlore played Class 7A Theodore last night.
