2022 Alabama taxpayers to receive rebate

Posted

Alabama has passed a law that grants a one-time rebate to 2022 Alabama taxpayers following a decrease on the grocery tax.

Eligible taxpayers who submitted their tax returns on or before Oct. 17, 2022, for the taxable year starting Jan. 1, 2021, will receive either a direct deposit or a check, according to Rep. Jennifer Fidler, R-Fairhope, who talked about the bill at a town hall meeting in June.

SB 86 states individuals classified as single, head of family, or married filing separately will receive a $150 check. Married couples filing jointly will receive a $300 check. The rebate checks will be mailed out after Nov. 30. If a taxpayer's bank account is linked to their tax return, they will receive an electronic deposit for the rebate.

"These checks will be sent out in time for Christmas and in time for shopping," said Fidler, a first-term state legislator who represents Fairhope, Foley, Summerdale, Silverhill and Magnolia.

Certain individuals will not be eligible for this rebate, including those claimed as dependents by another taxpayer for federal or Alabama income tax purposes for the taxable year starting on Jan. 1, 2021, as well as estates, trusts and non-residents.

Fidler noted that it remains uncertain whether another rebate will be offered in 2024.
