FAIRHOPE — The Fairhope baseball varsity served coach Stu Fuller his 700th coaching win and a cake after a 7-3 home-field comeback over Mary G. Montgomery on Saturday.

“That (700 wins) is more of a tribute to all the kids through the years who I’ve been fortunate to have play for me,” Fuller said.

After trailing 2-0 early FHS took the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a bases-loaded balk call. A five-hit sixth inning, including back-to-back-to-back RBIs by Trevor Wells (double), Chance Childress, Colin Millar (RBI), Avery Brock (RBI double) and Coleton Childress (RBI) made it 7-3.

Senior righthander Phillip Martin got the win with three strikeouts, three walks and one hit. And - Farmer took the save with one strikeout, no walks and no hits down the stretch.

The Pirates’ three-run third resulted from a leadoff walk by Millar, a SAC bunt by Seth Chambers, a fielders’ choice by Brock, an RBI single by Coleton Childress. A double by Kody Gratkowski and a two-RBI double by Brandon Jones.

“Great performances tonight by Martin and Farmer in their first appearances," Fuller said. "Great to have them back. We got off to a slow start this year, but we’ve had some guys down, too.”

Fuller said he was also pleased with the offense which out hit the Vikings 11-4.

“I thought our approach at the plate was better. That may have been due to the M.G.M. pitchers being around the zone more. They have a good team and they showed it early. They jumped out in front.

“Overall, though, we’re getting better and just need to persevere. And the more guys we get back (from injury) the better off we will be. So, we’re looking forward to the month of March and playing better as we get more people healthy.”

Fuller, who played at the University of South Alabama, is in his 18th spring at Fairhope High. He started his head-coaching career at Baldwin County High in 1989 then took over at Faith Academy (1990 – 1999) where he coached the Rams to a state title. He took over the Pirates in 2000 and went 24-13. He crossed the 500-win mark in 2010 when Fairhope advanced to the Class 6A state title series but fell short to Oxford.

The Pirates will host Baldwin County High Tuesday, March 7 at 6 p.m. and travel to Theodore to face the 7A, Area 1 Bobcats March 10 at 5 p.m.
