The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo announced Tuesday the death of Luna, a 13-year-old Timberwolf, in a social media post on Jan. 16.

According to the post, Luna arrived at the zoo at just 6 days old, along with her siblings, Jake and Jett, from a conservation group in Florida.

"Luna was deeply loved by her keepers and guests alike," the zoo wrote in the announcement. "It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Luna, the gray Timberwolf."

The post recalled that many guests may remember her as the “winky wolf” after she lost her right eye to bone cancer in early 2022.

According to the release, Luna's condition had recently worsened after several additional inoperable masses were identified in her body.

"Her quality of life became compromised, thus the best course of action for Luna was to humanely say goodbye," the release stated.

According to the release, Timberwolves are currently found in several different regions and over 70 countries. However, they are most commonly found in the northern regions of Canada and Russia. Their average life span in the wild ranges from three to five years, however in human care they can live up to 15 years on average.
