• Tigers mix of air and ground game with tight defense dominates Hurricanes

IRVINGTON, Ala. — Chase Overstreet attacked the Hurricanes defense with four touchdown completions to two Tiger receivers in a Baldwin County High win at Alma Bryant. The non-region victory improved the Class 6A Tigers to 3-2 overall as Alma Bryant fell to 1-4 overall.

Overstreet had 198 yards passing on 15-of-24 completions with one interception off a deflected pass. KJ Thomas reeled in touchdown tosses of 45 and 35 yards. Chris Hooks scored on TD receptions of 20 and 8 yards.

Nathan Barnes scored the first Tiger points of the game on a 30-yard TD run in the first quarter. Christopher Coleman was 5-for-5 on point-after kicks on the night. Baldwin County (3-2) led 21-7 at the half.

“Great to get back in the win column after playing two tough, top-teams in the state of Alabama back-to-back,” said Baldwin County head coach Nathan McDaniel.

“It’s always good to get a win and Alma Bryant’s kids fought hard and never quit. So I’m proud of our kids for keeping their intensity high throughout both halves. We had too many penalties obviously and we need to work harder to overcome those breakdowns, especially heading into the second half of the season.”

It is strictly business the rest of the regular season for BCHS as the Tigers have an all-region fight card to go.

“I was extremely unhappy with the penalties. However, I was very pleased with how we took care of the ball on offense and got after the ball on defense. I thought Chase played well at quarterback, Tony Grey and Nathan ran hard for us. Defensively, they played very well and we got some younger kids in on those last drives which is always good experience.”

The win was the first over a 7A opponent for the football Tigers since the supersized classification appeared in 2014. Alma Bryant’s two touchdowns came from quarterback Ry’Jai Bowie on runs of 7 and 1 yards. The Tigers will host Class 6A Robertsdale this Friday for homecoming as region play resumes. The Hurricanes travel to No. 1 ranked Class 7A McGill-Toolen Catholic.
