Baldwin County sees above-average rainfall in June so far

Posted

June has brought an unusual amount of rain to Mobile and Baldwin counties, with rainfall levels surpassing averages by several inches.

National Weather Service forecaster Steve Miller said the Mobile airport recorded 6.63 inches of rain so far this month, exceeding the average by 2.5 inches. Similarly, Pensacola airport experienced a significant downpour on June 15 through June 16, receiving 12.8 inches of rain, which was 8.26 inches above average.

Miller noted that June is typically considered one of the driest months for the region. The rainfall has come as a surprise to residents and experts alike.

It may have been soggy, but the weather pattern has not been limited to heavy rain. Over the span of one week, there have been reports of four tornadoes in Mobile, Baldwin and Escambia counties. This severe weather has caused 281 reports of wind, hail, lightning, tornado and flooding damage in the area.

"We have confirmed rainfall totals approaching 15 inches of rain in Mobile County in just one day," Miller said.

As the region faces these adverse weather conditions, Miller emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant.

"Pay attention, but also have an idea, if something occurs, where to go that is safe," he said. "In houses, bathrooms, hallways and any place that is sheltered is safe."

Strong rip currents have also been reported during recent inclement weather. Beachgoers are urged to exercise caution as Gulf Coast beaches have recently witnessed moderate to high rip currents, posing potential life-threatening risks.
Residents are urged to stay updated with the latest weather advisories and follow safety protocols to mitigate any potential risks associated with severe thunderstorms.

Temperatures will remain in the upper 80s and lower 90s in Baldwin County for the next week as probable thunderstorms continue to move into the region. Expect intermittent sunshine, but continue to prepare for more rain coming into the area for the next few days.
