Drainage, roadway improvements on tap for city

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — A big portion of Bay Minette will see improvements to drainage and roadways in coming months. The upgrades will take place along Daphne Road, East Hurricane and Moran Street in Bay Minette.

The city applied for and received a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant administered through ADECA. North Baldwin Utilities and the City of Bay Minette will also provide nearly $300,000 of in-kind work for the project, which will include upgrades to the water and sewerage system in these areas and resurfacing of all three roads.

“The city is very excited that work will soon begin on this project,” Mayor Bob Wills said. “We have been working on the grant for several years and it is about to come to fruition. This will provide much needed new infrastructure in the Old Daphne Road, East Hurricane Road and Morgan Street area.”

Some deep ditches will also be covered along East Hurricane Road and Moran Street. Construction is expected begin within a month, city officials said. A portion of the project has already been completed along Daphne Road to relieve flooding issues in that area.

Councilman Chris Norman said this work is very much needed.

“The improvements to the drainage, sewers and streets along Old Daphne Road, East Ellis Street and Moran Street, will alleviate the dangerous flood conditions that have been occurring in the area during heavy rains,” he said.

Norman went on to thank North Baldwin Utilities, Wills and the city council for approving the project and providing the in-kind work for additional upgrades.

“It is another great example of what can be accomplished when the city works in concert with NBU and other entities,” Wills said.
