BAY MINETTE — Martha Roley Ryan, a charter member and past-president of the reorganized Kiwanis Club of Bay Minette, was recently named as the Alabama Kiwanian of the Year at the Alabama District Conference in Columbiana.

Ryan was nominated for this distinction, and the honor was decided by the Past Governors Committee of the Alabama District of Kiwanis International.

The announcement of her victory caught Ryan by surprise, prompting her to reflect on the impact of her involvement.

"Saying that I was shocked is an understatement. I would have never dreamed that I would receive such an honor," she said in a news release. "I like being a part of Kiwanis because we are able to uplift and make lives better for children in our community."

Ryan said her upbringing serves a role in her a strong sense of duty to serve others.

"I love to serve my community and make life better for others, and in return it gives me purpose, a filled heart and a big smile. My parents, Clarence and Sue Roley, set the example for me to lead, serve, commit and do what's right because it is the right thing to do," she said.

Ryan's journey with the Kiwanis Club began with her attendance at an informational meeting just prior to COVID-19. Undeterred by the challenges posed by the global pandemic, she was eager to start the efforts to rejuvenate and reaffirm the club's role in Bay Minette. She encouraged others to join her in this revitalization process. Ryan offered her support throughout the challenges the pandemic brought, leading the charge in membership expansion and spearheading numerous service projects.

As figures within the club transitioned out of their roles, Ryan stepped up to take on leadership responsibilities, serving initially as the club's vice president and ultimately as its president. Her efforts extended the club's reach into the community through participation in various events, including the annual Easter Extravaganza, Burgers & Bingo on the Square, Ladies Night Out, RIDEYELLOW, Clean Out & Recycle Day and the Baldwin County Archives & History's annual re-enactment.

Among Ryan's contributions were initiatives like "Socktober," which involved distributing collection boxes to local businesses and churches to gather socks and undergarments for distribution among eight local schools. This initiative has since evolved into the "Seats and Feets" project, addressing broader needs. Furthermore, the club sponsored a coat drive for local schools.

As part of the club's revitalization, Ryan has helped with other projects, including the "Dogs on Hand" event, designed for both dogs and their human companions. Collaborating with local animal control and law enforcement units, the event offered information while featuring a "Pawgeant" Parade of Pets.

The Kiwanis Club, since its re-establishment in Bay Minette, undertook numerous smaller-scale service projects, including the "Day of Giving," wherein members replenished local Blessing Boxes with essential supplies.

Beyond her engagement with the Kiwanis Club, Ryan serves as the official "Bingo Caller" for the Burgers & Bingo on the Square event and serves as the emcee for the biannual Ladies Night Out, both sponsored by the City of Bay Minette. She is also actively involved with the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce and the 14th Street Church of Christ.

"Her friendly personality is a huge drawing card for Kiwanis, and her presence and warm welcome draws in potential members, donors and supporters. Kiwanis Club of Bay Minette is made better by her membership and her leadership," the nomination read.
