Daphne city employee allegedly shot and killed by her nephew

Posted

On Feb. 9 at approximately 8:10 a.m., the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a possible shooting at 9023 CR 64. The BCSO requested emergency mutual aid from the Daphne Police Department, who arrived on scene minutes later.

At the scene, officers with the Daphne Police Department took Donald Nicholson, 26, into custody. Entry was made into the residence by officers and deputies where the victim, Maria Anita Nicholson, 59, was found suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medical personnel arrived on scene and Nicholson was confirmed to be deceased.

Early investigation indicates that Maria Nicholson left her residence before 8 a.m. to go to work. She received call from a family member stating her nephew, Donald Nicholson, was shooting a gun at her residence. Ms. Nicholson entered the residence where she was allegedly intentionally shot by Donald Nicholson at least one time. A neighboring family member called 911 after hearing gunshots shortly after Ms. Nicholson’s arrived at the residence.

At this time, investigators believe the suspect was staying at the residence along with the victim.

Maria Nicholson was a longtime City of Daphne employee and has worked at the Daphne Police Department over a decade. She was currently assigned as an administrative assistant in support services.

Donald Nicholson is currently incarcerated at the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Correction’s Center where he is being held on a $200,000 bond.
