Dr. Nagendranath "Nagen" Bellare passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at Duke Medicine Pavillion in Durham, North Carolina. After a long battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, he took his last breath, surrounded by loving family.

Nagen was born on June 29, 1944, in Bangalore, India. He served as an oncologist and hematologist for 48 years, praying for and with his patients every single day.

In addition to caring for his patients like family, Nagen was the husband of Patty Lopes Bellare for 34 precious years. He was an incredibly proud father to Nita, Sanjiv, Nicole and Maureen; and grandfather to Leyla and Kai Bellare-Creswell; and granddogs, Marley and Brinkley.

Nagen genuinely had a passion for life, which was evident in everything he did. As a Certified Sommelier, he enjoyed sharing good wine with others. And, at any party, he was always the last to leave the dance floor.

Though he will truly be missed, we are confident that we will see him again.

Nagen was preceded in death by his father, Bhavanishankar Rao; his mother, Revati; and his stepmother, Ahalya.

He is survived by his wife; children; grandchildren; older brother, Ramananda; sister, Ramani; and nephews.

A celebration of life for Dr. Nagen Bellare will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Orange Beach United Methodist Church in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Reception to follow at Ono Commons.

In lieu of flowers, we are in the process of creating an account for tax-deductible donations toward lung transplant families and IPF research. For details, please visit https://www.facebook.com/nagen.bellare.
