Fairhope’s Adams taking football talents to North Alabama Lions

Pirate cornerback set to strengthen Baldwin County connections on the opposite end of the state

Fairhope’s Ameyr Adams became the newest commit for the University of North Alabama after he announced his pledge on Sunday, July 23, to mark the latest lower Alabama standout to join Lions head coach and Saraland native Brent Dearmon.

The 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback originally received an offer from North Alabama on June 18 then participated in the Lions’ offseason prospect camp on July 15. Dearmon tweeted there were 340 campers that represented 11 states at this year’s camp.

According to stats on MaxPreps, in 17 career games played, Adams has compiled 49 total tackles, 5 tackles for a loss, 2 interceptions for 70 interception return yards, 2 passes defended, 1 fumble recovery and 1 forced fumble. He was a first-team all-county honoree as a junior.

In the spring of his junior year, Adams helped the Pirate track squad claim the team title at the Baldwin County Championships as a leg of the winning 4x100-meter relay team. He went on to qualify for the state meet in the 100-meter dash thanks to a personal-record time of 11.17 at sectionals.

Charleston Southern was the first to extend an offer to Adams on June 4 but the Fairhope defensive back chose an in-state school. Despite the North Alabama campus being on the opposite end of the state of his hometown, there are several lower Alabama connections to Florence.

The Lions’ 2023 roster includes a pair of former Spanish Fort Toros in redshirt junior offensive lineman Nathan Brown as well as freshman defensive back Josiah Hixon. Another Spanish Fort graduate, Thomas Johnston, was a recent addition to the coaching staff where he’ll oversee the defensive line.

Joining Johnston on the defensive side will be DeShaun Davis, a Vigor alum, who will oversee the linebackers under Dearmon. The Lions’ newest head man, named to the position on Dec. 3, 2022, coached in Mobile at the high school level with Vigor (offensive coordinator 2008-10) and B.C. Rain (head coach 2011-12).

The Fairhope Pirates are set to open their campaign with a road trip to Spanish Fort on Aug. 24 and the North Alabama Lions kick off their season on Aug. 26 against Mercer in Montgomery.
