Garden Club introduced to blood lily and wisteria

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale Garden Club met on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at the G. P. Thames Senior Center. The program for the day was presented by Sandra Busby and Cyndi Gisczinski. Busby gave members an overview of the blood lily and Gisczinski explored the good, bad and ugly properties of wisteria. Members were reminded that Charlotte Zinner has provided several members with a blood lily and will have cuttings for other members this spring.

Katie Warren led a discussion with members on what to do about plants exposed to freezing temperatures. A wait-and-see approach was recommended. She explained that the roots were still warm and plants might rejuvenate themselves in the spring. Cutting them back if frozen would be the next step.

The business meeting included committee reports. Mary Ann Lindsay, publicity chairman, reported that local newspapers are printing press releases submitted. She recommended that members check the internet for previous garden club activities.

Jimmie Lou reported on the ongoing problem of developing a landscaping plan for the center. She has consulted with Mayor Charles Murphy and City Council members Sue Cooper and Ruthie Campbell. Mary Ann Lindsay will draft a letter to Murphy to request that this matter be added as an agenda item at one of the city’s monthly meetings.

Jimmie Lou circulated documents pertaining to the scholarship to be awarded to a horticulture student at the South Baldwin Center for Technology. Members had the opportunity to make additions and corrections to the documents.

Mary Frances Boykin was welcomed to the club.

Door prizes provided by Sandra Busby and Cyndi Gisczinski were won by Ken Ramey and Linda Morgan.

The Feb. 14 meeting will feature wild flowers and will be hosted by Katie Warren. Robertsdale Garden Club meets at 10 a.m., the second Tuesday of each month, September through May, and invites individuals to join them.
