In a move to increase public safety, the City of Gulf Shores announced that they have installed automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at 22 locations throughout the city.
Per the release, the project is in collaboration with Gulf Shores Fire Rescue, and are designed to deliver a dose of electrical energy to the heart in cases of sudden cardiac arrest, in a portable electronic device.
The devices are designed to deliver a dose of electrical energy to the heart in cases of sudden cardiac arrest, in a portable electronic device.
According to the release, the devices will analyze the heart rhythm and administer a controlled electric shock to restore normal cardiac function if necessary. The release also states that rapid access to AEDs significantly increases the chances of survival for individuals experiencing cardiac emergencies, as prompt defibrillation is critical in restoring heart rhythm and preventing irreversible damage.
“To ensure accessibility and prompt intervention during cardiac emergencies, the AEDs have been strategically placed at key locations within the city where community members gather for various activities and events,” the release stated. “Some of the designated locations include Gulf Shores City Hall, Bodenhamer Recreation Center, Erie H. Meyer Civic Center, Gulf Shores Sportsplex and Gulf Shores Public Library.”
"The placement of these Automated External Defibrillators represents a significant step forward in our mission to enhance public safety and emergency response capabilities within Gulf Shores." Said Emergency Medical Services Officer Nick Russell. "With these devices readily available, we empower our community members to take immediate action in critical situations, potentially saving lives."
Per the release, the devices were purchased by the city for $34,385.66 and were previously approved by the city council in 2023.
