Gulf Shores considering speed limit reductions

Posted

Gulf Shores City Council was poised to discuss a request to lower speed limits on five local roads during its work session Monday, June 19.

HOA's of Osprey Landing, Raintree and Mighty Oaks subdivisions requested the change, citing concerns of "speeding within their developments while children are present," according to city documents. The change would reduce the speed limit from 25 to 15 miles per hour on Summerset Drive, Darla Court, Dawson Drive, Raintree Lane and Oaks Drive.

"Engineering and Police reviewed the requests and noted that all three subdivisions have single-entries with dead end streets," city documents state.

"Given that there are no secondary access points for first responders to these developments, (city staff) we support the request to reduce the speed limits to 15 mph to lower the risk of accidents along the internal roadways."

If approved, the engineering department will collaborate with Public Works to update signs. According to the city, the costs are included in the Public Works Streets Division budget.
