MOBILE, AL – The Alabama State Trooper post in Mobile is investigating three deaths in Baldwin County, one on Aug. 4 and two Aug. 5.

There were traffic fatalities on Alabama 181 just north of County Road 44, and another on Alabama 225 north of Spanish Fort, both Aug. 5, and a boating fatality on the Fish River on Aug. 4.

Douglas Edward Haviland, 56, of Gulf Shores was killed when the 1998 BMW he was driving left the roadway and struck a utility pole about 4:46 p.m. Haviland was pronounced dead a short time later at a local hospital. The crash occurred on Alabama 181 just north of Baldwin County 44, four miles east of Fairhope.

On Aug. 4 Luke Sheppard Johnson, 25, of Fairhope when the 12 foot Tom Boy boat he was operating struck a sea wall sometime after midnight on Fish River near Isle of Pines Drive. Johnson, who was not wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) was ejected from the vessel and pronounced dead at the scene.

The vessel’s female passenger, who was injured in the crash, was transported to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. The preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

A three-vehicle crash Friday, Aug. 5, claimed the life of a Bay Minette man. John Charles Vanarsdale, 26, was killed when the Harley-Davidson motorcycle he was operating collided with a 2015 Nissan Rogue. The Nissan was then struck by a 1991 Ford Explorer. Vanarsdale was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash occurred at 8:05 p.m. on Alabama 225 at the 1.39 mile marker, about one-half mile north of Spanish Fort. Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate all three incidents.
