Parrot Heads will soon be flocking to Gulf Shores as members of the international Jimmy Buffett fan club Parrot Heads in Paradise seek to move the annual Meeting of the Minds from Key West to The Hangout.
Grant Brown, recreation and cultural affairs director for the city, presented a public assembly application at a Sept. 18 Gulf Shores City Council work session, citing that the organization plans to move the event from Florida for the first time in 30 years.
According to the application, the event is planned to be hosted at The Hangout from 9 a.m. - 11.p.m. on Oct. 23-26.
The event will feature live music, auctions, craft vendors, book signings and donation drives.
"The Meeting of the Minds came to us, choosing to not go to Key West this year, even before the passing of Jimmy Buffet," Brown said. "They are coming to Gulf Shores, and they hope this will be a long-term home for them. We expect this to be a big turnout for them."
Brown said that while The Hangout is planned to be the primary location, other locations on the island will also be hosting some of the weekend events, including Lulu's, The Gulf and Coastal Orange Beach. He also said that while a public assembly permit application wouldn't normally be needed since these locations are private property, the organization is requesting several registration tents to be placed along the street at The Hangout.
In addition to the weekend festivities, Brown also presented another public assembly application for a new event called "Skippin and Sippin," a Meeting of the Minds breast cancer 5K and one-mile walk. According to the application, if approved, the event would take place from 8-10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28, at Lulu's Gulf Shores.
Brown also said the organization plans to offer two official event parking lots and shuttle service to attendees of the event, picking up from various locations in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The potential shuttle route and stops would include:
Shuttle route (pick ups/drop offs every 20 minutes):
Lulu's Gulf Shores
Additional shuttle stops:
The application is scheduled to be voted on at the next city council meeting on Sept. 25. The meeting is open to the public and begins at 4 p.m.
