America has lost another of its Greatest Generation.

John James Dennehy, a native of Chicago, Illinois and a resident of Foley, Alabama, died peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017 at his residence after a brief illness.

John lived a long and exciting life. He was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and was stationed in Karachi, India. He had a passion for flying, and flew C-47 airplanes during the war.

He was a member of the Ancient Aviators of South Alabama. His name is inscribed on the National Aviation and Space Exploration Wall of Honor in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Dennehy had an electrical engineering degree from Illinois Institute of Technology. He retired after 33 years from Commonwealth Edison in Chicago, Illinois.

He was an active member of Saint Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in Foley.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas H. and Catherine Casey Dennehy; his beloved wife of 40 years, Dolores Ann Matuzak Dennehy; three sons, Mark, Kevin and Joseph Dennehy; brother, Thomas Joseph Dennehy; sister, Marie McCarthy.

He is survived by his son, Daniel Michael Dennehy of Chicago, Illinois; daughter, Mary Patrice Dennehy of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his current wife of 17 years, Joyce Lindeman Dennehy of Foley; and his sister, Kathleen Francis Toomey of Orland Park, Illinois. He will also be greatly missed by his numerous nieces, nephews, good friends, stepchildren and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017 at 10 a.m., located at 601 W. Laurel Ave., Foley, AL 36535.
