FAIRHOPE — The Junior Auxiliary is extending an opportunity for young women to "shop" prom dresses, accessories and essential items without any cost.

Each year, the provisional class of JA presents a community service project. Project Prom was created seven years ago and has been growing ever since.

“All dresses, shoes and accessories are acquired through donations to Junior Auxiliary of the Eastern Shore,” said JA member Annie Dixon. “We receive donations from various sources including JA members, local businesses and individuals throughout the community. Some items that we receive are brand new with tags, and some are gently used.”

Dixon said this project has not only allowed girls within the community to feel special and worthy, but it also builds relationships and provides positive role models.

“Every year, there are at least a few girls that walk away with their 'dream dress' in tears. There are always big smiles,” Dixon said. “Many of the students who attend are not able to afford a prom dress and may not have been able to attend prom otherwise. Other times, we’ve seen young women come in tears because they’ve searched everywhere and cannot find what they’re looking for and they’re desperate to find anything that fits. It’s absolutely magical to see them light up and change from being anxious and nervous to ripping through the racks and joyous when they find ‘the one.’”

The Junior Auxiliary provides several drop off locations for donations throughout the Eastern Shore, including:
