TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Spanish Fort rallied down the stretch to claim a 23-13 road win at Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa in their round-two contest over the undefeated and No. 1-ranked team in Class 6A.
The Patriots scored first when Cole Frederick tossed to Trey Ross for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Thanks to a 37-yard field goal by Matt Quinn before the half and a third-quarter interception and return by Tyler Miller for a score, the Spanish Fort Toros were up 10-7.
Spanish Fort senior quarterback Wyatt Wilkinson then found Jalen Wayne for a 43-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead. Wilkinson later added an 8-yard touchdown run for the Toros’ final score.
HTHS was averaging 45-points per game until the Toros held the Patriots to a season-low. Brian Robinson, a University of Alabama commit, added a 2-yard touchdown run for the final HTHS margin. He rushed for 93 yards.
Spanish Fort (9-2) will host Opelika (11-1) in the third round of the Class 6A playoffs Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. The Toros led by head coach Ben Blackmon defeated the Bulldogs led by brother Brian Blackmon last year.
