SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Spanish Fort football got back on track Friday night a week after being shut out by Blount. The Toros (5-2, 4-1) defended their home field with a 27-6 victory over the visiting Foley Lions (3-4, 2-3).

The Toros found little resistance on their opening drive, marching 60 yards in just nine plays. The drive culminated in a 4-yard rushing score by quarterback Jack Samsel, a Baker transfer, which gave the home team a 7-0 lead.

Foley responded with their own scoring drive, aided by three Toro penalties which resulted in first downs. Lion running back Tyron Cosby punched the ball in from 4 yards out for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was missed, allowing Spanish Fort to maintain a 7-6 lead.

Samsel extended the home-team lead with a 15-yard touchdown toss to Holden Wilson. They went for the two-point conversion, but Samsel's pass was batted down, leaving the lead at 13-6.

Spanish Fort started to slowly pull away in the second half when Samsel and company continued to punish the Lions defense. The quarterback hit 6'6 target Trey Barry in the back of the end zone from 13 yards out to extend the lead to 20-6. Samsel finished the night 16 of 21 for 162 yards and 3 total touchdowns.

The Lions weren't able to muster much else on offense after starting quarterback Chris Armstrong was pulled from the game early in the final quarter. His replacement, backup quarterback and starting punter Garrett Mayo missed on his first 6 pass attempts and eventually finished the game with just 4 passing yards.

Wide receiver Connor Hegan put the finishing touches on the victory with a jet sweep toss he took around the right end resulted in a 5-yard touchdown to bring the final score to 27-6.

The Toros take on Saraland Thursday night in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPN at 7 p.m. Foley will be back home in region action Friday against Mary G. Montgomery.
