Officers need assistance locating daughter for questioning

Foley Police Department and the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit need the community’s assistance in locating Katie Smith regarding her mother’s death.

On Wednesday, Aug. 30, the Foley Police Department (FPD) responded to a death investigation at the Town and Country Motel at 1401 N. McKenzie St, Foley. Officers found Shirley Smith, 69, deceased. The investigation determined the circumstances surrounding her death were suspicious, but there was no clear suspect at the time. The FPD requested the assistance of the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit.

The crime scene unit processed the crime scene and determined the victim had several stab wounds. An autopsy has been scheduled at which time the cause of death will be determined after the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences conducts its independent inquiry.

According to a press release from the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit, the investigation indicated the victim, Shirley Smith, lived with her daughter Katie Lee Smith, 36, in a unit at the Town and Country Motel.

Katie Lee Smith was seen at their rental unit Aug. 30 but left the scene before officers arrived. Witnesses saw her at the rental unit with the victim in the days leading up to Shirley Smith’s death.

Katie Lee Smith has information that is vital to the investigation, and she is wanted for questioning regarding the death of Shirley Smith.

Katie Lee Smith is described as a white female, 5-foot-1 inch tall and weighs approximately 120 pounds. She left the Town and Country Motel on foot and was last seen wearing a gray tank top. Officers canvassed the area for several hours however they have been unable to locate her.
