2024 Tax Season opens Jan. 29; IRS Free File Guided Tax Software ready for 2023 Tax returns

Posted

On Jan. 12, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officially announced that the IRS Free File Guided Tax Software service is now available for taxpayers ahead of the upcoming tax season.

In its 22nd filing season, the IRS Free File initiative is now live. The IRS set to begin accepting and processing individual tax returns on Jan. 29. Taxpayers nationwide can access free software products offered by IRS Free File trusted partners by visiting IRS.gov.

"The IRS continues its partnership with Free File Inc. to give taxpayers an opportunity to file their taxes electronically for free," said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel in a news release. "Taxpayers will always have choices for how they file their taxes. They can file using tax software, a trusted tax professional, Free File, or free tax preparation services through IRS partners. Through the years, Free File has helped millions of taxpayers, and it remains an important option for people to consider using to quickly and easily file their taxes."

IRS Free File stands as one of many free options available to taxpayers for filing their returns, either online or in person. The program is facilitated through a public-private partnership between the IRS and Free File Inc., formerly the Free File Alliance. Eligible taxpayers can access online products for free by starting from IRS Free File.

This year, eight private-sector partners will provide online guided tax software products to taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $79,000 or less in 2023, with one partner offering a product in Spanish.

While the filing season officially commences on Jan. 29, IRS Free File providers will accept completed tax returns and hold them until they can be filed electronically on that date. Taxpayers with an AGI over $79,000 can utilize the IRS's Free File Fillable Forms (FFFF), the electronic version of IRS paper forms, also starting Jan. 29.

How IRS Free File Works

Each IRS Free File provider sets its own eligibility rules based on age, income and state residency. Taxpayers with an AGI of $79,000 or less in 2023 can find a product that meets their needs, with some providers offering free state return preparation. Active-duty military personnel with an AGI of $79,000 or less in 2023 can use any IRS Free File product.

IRS Free File serves as an effective way to claim valuable tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the Child Tax Credit, and other eligible credits. The EITC Assistant, available in English and seven other languages, helps taxpayers determine their eligibility for the EITC. The EITC Assistant can be found at apps.irs.gov/app/eitc.
