SUMMERDALE — Mark your calendars and prepare your taste buds for the 25th-annual Baldwin County Sheriff's Youth Ranch Pig Roast Fundraiser, a local tradition set to take place on Oct. 7.

This event, organized to support the Baldwin County Boys Ranch, will feature house tours starting at 3 p.m. followed by a dinner beginning at 5 p.m.

For $25, attendees can eat a dinner spread featuring pulled pork, an array of sides and desserts. Those looking to share the evening with friends and family can reserve a table for $250.

The event, held at the Baldwin County Sheriffs Youth Ranch gymnasium, promises more than just food. It's a night filled with activities, including split the pot, a silent auction, live auction and more.

All proceeds will go toward supporting the Baldwin County Boys Ranch. This organization provides loving Christian homes for Alabama's at-risk children aged 6 to 18, offering them a chance for a brighter future.

“There are several benefits to being raised in a loving Christian home,” said Steven Jones, director of the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Boys Ranch in Summerdale. “We know it’s important to give our young men hope and something to believe in. Something that will never fail them or let them down.”

The director added that the program is funded almost entirely by private donations from individuals, churches, civic clubs, corporations and foundations.

“Eighty-five cents of every dollar goes directly toward the care of our Ranchers. Statistics report that the cost of raising a child is $15,512.52 to $17,459.43 per year,” Jones said.

Since 1966, the Baldwin County Boys Ranch has assisted in transforming the lives of children who come from unfortunate circumstances. Their mission is to create a safe and nurturing environment where these young individuals can thrive. They provide essential life skills training, assistance with attending local public schools, educational advocacy, tutoring as needed and opportunities for after-school employment. This holistic approach ensures that each child gets the support they need to reach their full potential.

Jones, who grew up at the ranch, said he is happy to be back where it all started.

“I believe in this ranch; I believe in the system we have in place, and I know it’s a success. I know it because I’ve lived it,” he said. “I get a front row seat to the difference we’re making in these young men’s lives. I am a truly blessed man.”
