Formed in 1986, the Baldwin County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee has brought the community together to remember Martin Luther King Jr. and his message. This year marks the 37th year of its annual program and march.

The celebration will kick off at the Trinity A.M.E. Church in Bay Minette, Sunday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. The program's keynote speaker is Reverand Clyde Jones, associate minister at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Daphne.

Daphne is the site for the 37th Annual Memorial March, Monday, Jan. 15. Willie Williams, President and founding member of the Baldwin County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee said participants will assemble at Daphne City Hall beginning at 10 a.m. with the march beginning at approximately 10:30 a.m. Participants will march from Daphne City Hall to Daphne Civic Center, a 1.2-mile walk.

A memorial program will follow the march at the Daphne Civic Center. Williams said this year's theme comes from Romans 14:14, "Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and mutual edification."

The annual event changes locations each year, rotating between Bay Minette, Daphne, Fairhope and Foley. Williams said the reasoning for the rotation is to engage the newest residents and diverse groups each year. He also said the Baldwin County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee actively works to involve young people in the community to help them remember King's work.

The Baldwin County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee also awards an annual scholarship to a Baldwin County student to assist in continuing their education and has recently started a legal fund.
