Five local schools and seven athletes were among the first wave of Baldwin County all-stars announced by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association for the cross country and volleyball competitions as part of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s North-South All-Star Week scheduled for July 15-19.
In the eighth-annual cross country race, Orange Beach will be represented by Libby Tierce alongside Bayside Academy’s Catherine Doyle and Annie Midyett. All three runners recorded top-10 individual finishes at the state meet this fall led by Doyle and Midyett in second and fourth, respectively, in Class 5A and Tierce in 10th on the Class 4A stage.
In the boys’ race, individual Class 3A state champion Caden Phillippi from Bayshore Christian will be one of the 10-member squad seeking a win for the South All-Stars. The North All-Stars hold a 4-2 overall advantage in both the girls’ and boys’ competition.
On the volleyball court, athletes from three different Eastern Shore schools will come together to assist the South squad toward a third straight win in the all-time series. Despite the recent success, the North All-Star squad still owns a 15-10 lead.
Misty Kate Smith from Bayside Academy, Taylor Ishmael from Spanish Fort and Lina Ramos from St. Michael Catholic will all share a roster for the 28th-annual North-South volleyball match. Smith was a member of the all-state tournament team following the Admirals’ 21st consecutive state title as a sophomore and both Ishmael and Ramos were recognized on preseason watch lists before this season. Ishmael was on the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Phenom Watch List and Ramos made the Alabama High School Volleyball Coaches Association’s Watch List.
The AHSADCA will also host North-South All-Star games in baseball, softball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ tennis, and boys’ and girls’ golf during the All-Star Week in Montgomery.
The 65th-annual North-South All-Star Football Classic was played last December in Mobile where the South won 31-28 thanks in part to an MVP effort from Daphne’s Nick Clark. The South All-Star squad holds a 35-28-2 lead in the series, which dates back to 1948.
