Foley Main Street seeks artists for Cat Alley murals depicting town's history

FOLEY — Foley Main Street's Cat Alley has reached its second phase and is searching for artists to create three new murals.

The three murals will depict various aspects of Foley's history. Submissions can be sent in for one or all the doors. Foley Main Street Executive Director Darrelyn Dunmore said one artist might be chosen for all three doors or separate artists for each of the doors.

Artists must have mural experience and will be expected to send examples of their work as well as a sketch, painting and or color guide of concept.

To keep the theme of cats along the alley, Dunmore said the artists should add these furry creatures in their work but must make sure they are hidden.

"We want them to be like Easter eggs," she said. "So, when people walk down the alley, they can say 'oh, there's one right there.'"

There will be three door areas: Football theme representing the diversity of Foley football on a single wood door (47.6 square feet), Barin field- old planes on a large wooden area that has a door at the bottom center (168 square feet) and two metal doors with concrete ramps and overhangs that depict old phones and gladiolus.

The compensation for the artist chosen to work on area one is $1,000, area two will receive $3,300, and area three will earn $2,500.

All areas will be properly cleaned beforehand, and artists are responsible for prepping the surface to paint on and covering the final artwork with a graffiti proof sealant.

Submissions are due by Oct. 20, and the artist or artists will be contacted by Oct. 29. Dunmore added that Foley Main Street may work with the artist or artists to finalize any design concept and make changes if necessary.
