MONTGOMERY — Nine undefeated teams will be among the 14 schools that will be heading to Tuscaloosa Dec. 6-8 to compete in the 2023 AHSAA Super 7 State Football Championships at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

That unbeaten list grows to 12 when the teams playing in the AHSAA’s third Girls’ Flag Football Finals are added on Wednesday.

Gulf Shores (14-0) is Baldwin County’s lone representative at the Super 7 where the Dolphins will make their first title-game appearance in history against the defending Class 5A state champion Ramsay Rams (12-2) in Thursday’s 7 p.m. game.

For the second straight year, all seven boys’ championship games and the Girls’ Flag finals will be televised live over the Alabama Public Television Network. The games are being produced by the NFHS Network with Vince Earley and his WOTM TV crew producing the games. All games will also be live streamed over the NFHS Network and over the AHSAA Radio Network as well.

Tickets are available at GoFan by visiting gofan.co/app/school/AHSAA.

The Girls’ Flag Football championships, which are in their third and final year of emerging sport status, have doubled the number of schools participating in the sport. Flag football will officially become an AHSAA championship sport beginning with the 2024-25 and 2025-26 classification period.

GIRLS’ FLAG FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (home teams listed second in each pairing)

Class 1A/5A Finals: Montgomery Catholic Knights (17-3) at Wenonah Dragons (20-0), Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1 p.m.

Action gets underway next week with Wenonah facing Montgomery Catholic in the first-ever Class 1A/5A girls’ flag championship game at 1 p.m.

Class 6A/7A Finals: Central-Phenix City Red Devils (17-0) at Vestavia Hills Rebels (17-0), Wednesday, Dec. 6, 3 p.m.

Following that contest at 3 p.m., Vestavia Hills and Central-Phenix City meet in the 6A/7A division finals.

SUPER 7 STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS (home teams listed second in each pairing)

Class 5A Finals: Gulf Shores Dolphins (14-0) at Ramsay Rams (12-2), Thursday, Dec. 7, 7 p.m.

Ramsay earned its repeat trip to the title game with a 35-14 win over Guntersville in the North semifinal. The Rams of Coach Ronnie Jackson will be looking for their third Blue Map in program history with another from 2016.

Gulf Shores’ 45-0 win over Eufaula in the South semifinal secured the program’s first trip to the championship contest. The Dolphins of Coach Mark Hudspeth have allowed 8.9 points per game while scoring an average of 39.6 points per game.

Class 7A Finals: Central-Phenix City Red Devils (12-0) at Thompson Warriors (11-1), Wednesday, Dec. 6, 7 p.m.

Four-time defending Class 7A state football champion Thompson and unbeaten Central-Phenix City open the Super 7 boys’ action Wednesday night at 7 p.m., in the much-anticipated Class 7A finals.

The Warriors’ last playoff loss came at the hands of the Red Devils in the 2018 state championship game. Thompson’s only loss this season was a 36-33 loss to Class 6A Clay-Chalkville on September 28 — a game shown live on ESPN which has reportedly been labeled the “most-watched” high school game in ESPN history.

Class 6A Finals: Saraland Spartans (14-0) at Clay-Chalkville Cougars (13-0), Friday, Dec. 8, 7 p.m.

The Cougars of Coach Drew Gilmer rolled through the season undefeated and beat Parker 38-13 in the semifinals to set up a Class 6A state championship showdown with unbeaten and defending state champion Saraland (14-0), which comes into the game riding a 20-game winning streak. The two teams met once before in 2014 in the 6A finals where Clay-Chalkville won 36-31 at Auburn.

Saraland, coached by Jeff Kelly, has scored 726 points this season (51.9 per game) and allowed only 13.5 points per game. The Cougars are scoring 40.0 points per game and yielding only 10.5.

Class 3A Finals: Mobile Christian Leopards (14-0) at Madison Academy Mustangs (14-0), Thursday, Dec. 7, 11 a.m.

The other Super 7 game that pits unbeaten teams will come in Class 3A on Thursday at 11 a.m. when Mobile Christian and Madison Academy tangle in the first game of the day.

Class 1A Finals: Coosa Christian Conquerors (9-5) at Leroy Bears (13-0), Thursday, Dec. 7, 3 p.m.

That will be followed by the 1A finals featuring defending state champion Leroy and Coosa Christian, the only team in the field of finalists this year that was not a No. 1 seed.

The Conquerors, who downed Pickens County 21-12 in the North semis, have yielded only 7.8 points a game while scoring at a 42-point pace. The Bears come in with Class 1A’s longest current winning streak (19). Head coach Jason Massey was deployed to active military duty in September after a 4-0 start, and interim head coach Chan Lowe has directed the last nine wins — including a 27-24 victory over previously unbeaten Elba (13-1) in the South semifinals on Friday.

Class 4A Finals: Montgomery Catholic Knights (14-0) at Cherokee County Warriors (13-1), Friday, Dec. 8, 11 a.m.

Friday’s schedule opens with the Class 4A Super 7 finals featuring Montgomery Catholic and Cherokee County at 11 a.m. The Knights of Coach Kirk Johnson beat B.T. Washington 28-0 in the semifinals and have outscored opponents 579-73. Johnson, in his third season as head coach, is 40-2 overall.

Cherokee County reached the state finals last season falling to Andalusia. The Warriors of Coach Jacob Kelley rolled past Westminster Christian 50-6 in the other 4A semifinal.

Class 2A Finals: Fyffe Red Devils (13-1) at Reeltown Rebels (13-0), Friday, Dec. 8, 3 p.m.

The Red Devils beat Region 7 rival Pisgah 32-14 in the semifinals — and handed head coach Paul Benefield the 350th win of his high school coaching career. He became just the third coach in AHSAA history to reach that milestone. UMS-Wright’s Terry Curtis and Central-Clay County’s Danny Horn both reached that milestone during the regular season this year.

Reeltown squeaked out a 31-28 victory over previously undefeated B.B. Comer (13-1) Friday night at Legion Stadium in Sylacauga with Gaines Tapley booting a 23-yard field goal on the final play of the game to lift the Rebels of Coach Matt Johnson to the victory and a Super 7 berth. The field goal was the first one attempted by Reeltown this season.

The Saraland and Clay-Chalkville battle will close out the 28th annual Super 7 Championships in Tuscaloosa on Friday night.
