Four-star rising senior fielded over 20 Division I offers, currently eighth-ranked all-purpose back in the nation

After 23 Division I offers, Gulf Shores rising senior Ronnie Royal announced his commitment to the NC State Wolfpack Friday morning. The all-state, four-star athlete is currently ranked as the eighth-best all-purpose back in the nation according to Rivals.

“Commitment is an act, not a word,” Royal said in his social media announcement. “I’m ecstatic to announce my commitment to North Carolina State University.”

The Dolphins are set to open the 2023 regular season against the St. Michael Catholic Cardinals on Aug. 24 at home. St. Michael is currently head coached by Philip Rivers, an NC State Hall of Famer who still owns passing records at the school as well as in the Atlantic Coast Conference as a member of the Wolfpack.

A key part of the winningest team in Gulf Shores High School history last year, Royal has been named first-team all-state by the Alabama Sports Writers Association the last four seasons in a row. He was recognized as an athlete in eighth grade and a running back in freshman year at Alexandria. He was again recognized as an athlete in both his sophomore and junior seasons at Gulf Shores.

NC State was the first to offer the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Royal this calendar year on Jan. 26 which served as his 13th overall offer.

Royal also fielded offers from Central Florida, Florida State, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Georgia Southern, Troy, UAB, Coastal Carolina, Alabama A&M, Austin Peay, South Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, UNLV, Illinois, Boston College, Louisiana, Temple, Middle Tennessee, Liberty, Tulane and Tulsa.

Rivals currently has Royal as a 5.8-graded prospect and the 22nd overall recruit in the state of Alabama. On the ESPN300 list, he checked in at No. 291 where he was the 33rd-ranked athlete in the country.

Along with his announcement on social media, Royal posted a highlight video featuring music from Youngboy NBA, one of Royal’s favorite artists to listen to before and after the game.
