Gulf Shores freshman Tereza Mojs powered her way to the No. 1 singles state title in Class 4A-5A by dropping only one set in her five matches.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association’s state tournament also crowned champions in Class 7A on Tuesday before Class 1A-3A and Class 6A open competition at the end of his week at the Mobile Tennis Center.

Mojs cruised through the first three rounds on Monday in straight sets to set up a rematch of last week’s sectional finals against Sarah Ladd from UMS-Wright, who was also the defending individual champion. The Dolphin freshman took down Millie Hill from Demopolis, Sadie Anthony from Leeds and Kenza Bilbeisi with 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Although Mojs lost the first set of Tuesday’s semifinals by a 4-7 margin, she came back to earn a 6-2 decision then outlasted Ladd in a 10-6 battle to earn a spot in the state finals.

Peyton Parrish from Russellville awaited Mojs in the state finals having dropped only three sets en route to the semifinals. With the state title on the line, Mojs caught fire again and lost only game to win the individual title by a 6-0, 6-1 margin.

Competing in her second straight state tournament to mark Gulf Shores’ first competitor at the last meet of the season in six years, Mojs avenged a second-round loss from last year. And as only a freshman, she’ll immediately start her own title defense with three high school seasons remaining.
