Historical Society seeking names to engrave on monument in Blakely Park

Posted

To celebrate and honor Baldwin County residents, the Baldwin County Historical Society is set to install a second slab at Blakely Historic Park and is currently seeking names to engrave on this monument.

Marking their centenary milestone in October 2023, the society commemorated a century of steadfast historical preservation efforts. As part of the festivities, two monuments were erected, with one commemorating the inaugural assembly held at Blakely State Park in 1923 and the second slated to feature the names of distinguished centennial nonor roll members.

Honor roll inductees will be those who have been instrumental in the preservation of the history of Baldwin County or those who played a significant role in local history.

The society is currently on the lookout for 40 names to inscribe on this monument.

"In planning for the centennial event for October 2023, the committee was inspired to provide a lasting memorial to those members and our ancestors," said the president of BCHS, Harriet Outlaw. "The Centennial Monument is a scroll marker. The idea of listing the names on the centennial scroll marker evolved into a separate monument to contain all of the names."
According to Outlaw, this monument is the only monument attempting to list people who are a part of Baldwin County history and current citizens who are the legacy.

"We have inherited the history of our county from the people who created that history," she said. "The mission of the Society is to preserve the history of our area, and the people are the history- makers and preservationists."

The roster of honor roll inductees must be finalized by March 1. Each line of 25 spaces will be allotted for every $100 donation. This additional monument honoring the Centennial Honor Roll names is scheduled for dedication in the spring.

For those interested in submitting a name for inclusion on this monument, inquiries can be directed to bchistsoc@gmail.com.
