Mills residents vote Aug. 22 whether to become part of Foley

Posted

Mills Community will decide Tuesday, Aug. 22, whether they want to become part of the city of Foley.

The annexation vote will be at New Fellowship Church at 17535 Little Rock Road. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

About 170 people live in the area proposed for annexation in west Foley and north of U.S. 98. All registered voters in the area proposed for annexation are eligible to cast ballots in the referendum.

Part of the Mills Community is already in the Foley corporate limits. The Alabama Legislature approved a bill in May to allow residents in the remaining area of the community to vote on the issue of annexation into the city.

The area where annexation is proposed includes about 105 lots. In an earlier comment, Mayor Ralph Hellmich said most of the residents indicated that they wanted their community to become part of Foley.

“We had 105 lots down there and only three said they didn’t want to come in. The rest signed it and said they wanted to come in,” Hellmich said. “They very much want to be part of Foley. Half of the Mills Community is already Foley. The other half wants to be as well.”
