Myrta Ellenior Green Moore, 97, passed away in her home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Thursday, May 18, 2023. She was born on January 19, 1926, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Bertha and Osceola Green. She graduated from Landon High School and studied at Jacksonville University. She was lovingly married to Harold Moore for 56 years, until his death in 2006. She was grateful to her brother Jack (Elkins, Sr.) for introducing them. As fate would have it, Jack and Harold attended air conditioning school together in Chicago. Jack brought Harold home to Jacksonville one weekend, introduced him to his sister, and the rest is history.

Myrta began her career at Florida East Coast Railroad. Her first job was checking seals on boxcars at night. She walked up and down the tracks, alone, checking them with just the light from a lantern. She was never afraid of anything. She worked her way up to Chief Clerk to the General Master, Mechanics office at FEC RR Bowden Yards. She stayed and worked in Jacksonville while her husband attended the University of Florida in Gainesville. That was the beginning of her lifelong love of the Florida Gators. In later years, when she became a resident of Alabama, Alabama Crimson Tide would become another love. After her husband completed college, they started their family with their daughter Nancy and later with their son George. Her husband’s career took them to Merritt Island, Florida, and then to Mobile, Alabama. There she opened her own business, Moore’s Income Tax, and ran it as an entrepreneur for over 30 years. Many of her clients continued to request her services years after the business closed its doors.

She was a devout Christian who loved the Lord and dedicated her service to the church throughout her life. She served at South Riverside Baptist Church in Jacksonville, First Baptist Church in Merritt Island, Dauphin Way Baptist Church in Mobile, and First Baptist Church in Bay Minette. She served in roles such as teaching Sunday School and leading the traveling youth choir. She always fondly remembered her days of producing and directing large theater productions at First Baptist Church in Merritt Island when Pastor Adrian Rogers was the lead pastor there. She was immersed in every part of it, from the script and the acting to the costumes and the music, and still had the playbills from the productions she led.

She dearly loved her family, and also her family history. She spent many years with her friend and niece, Frances O’Steen, tracing the family genealogy back to the Minorcans in St. Augustine, Florida.  She loved to keep family photos and family heirlooms and knew every back story and detail about each one. She also cherished close friends and neighbors that she considered family.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold George Moore, Sr., her son Harold George Moore, Jr., her parents Osceola and Bertha Green, her brothers, Evans, Elam, Edwin, Ernest, and Elkins (Jack) Green, her sisters-in-law Marie, Velma, Bernice and Betty Green, and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by her daughter Nancy Ford (Ricky), grandchildren Paige Ford Koster (Jeff) and Randy Ford, great-grandchildren Rose and Danny Koster, all of Tuscaloosa. She also leaves a sister, Mary Green Kinard (Albert) of Jacksonville and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
