MOBILE — When the "Call to Battle Stations" sounds the Living History Crew will jump into action aboard the USS Alabama.
Witness history come to life at Battleship Memorial Park Saturday, June 3, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the Living History Crew Drill. Visitors will have a chance to interact with WWII reenactors aboard the USS Alabama and the USS Drum. Crewmen, dressed in WWII period Navy uniforms, hold demonstrations throughout the day, conduct weapons briefings and share stories told to them by the original crewmen.
While the event spans the day, the big event happens at 1 p.m. when "Call to Battle Stations" is sounded. That is your cue to grab a spot on the deck and watch as vintage enemy aircraft fly over and "attack" the ship (planes fly based on weather conditions that day). The USS Alabama crewmen will defend her with their guns blazing. Those in attendance will take in the whole experience while the crew fires the ship's 20mm and 40 mm guns.
The Deep South Amateur Radio Club will broadcast from Radio Central aboard the ship during the drill and welcome visitors to come and listen. Ham radio operators can listen to the broadcast, the call letters are K4DSR and K5LDA broadcasting between 20 and 40.
The drill is open to the public and included with general admission. Battleship Memorial Park, at 2703 Battleship Parkway, Mobile, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last ticket sold at 4 p.m.
