According to the 2023 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report compiled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there were 6,392 veteran suicides in 2021, averaging 17.5 veteran suicides per day.

To address this pressing issue, Vets Recover, an organization offering immediate and long-term care for veterans and first responders in crisis, opened on April 17 in Mobile.

Its mission revolves around eliminating barriers to care, providing quality integrated health care and fostering a stronger community through recovery and connection.

The overarching vision is to establish a flourishing community where service members, veterans, first responders and their families receive the necessary care to enhance their overall well-being. The organization prioritizes building meaningful relationships with every individual who seeks assistance.

According to its website, the continuum-of-care at Vets Recover was developed by clinical experts and veterans in recovery who have firsthand experience with mental health issues, addiction, and trauma, common challenges faced by many veterans, first responders, and families. The continuum-of-care offers tailored support for Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF), ranging from community-based peer support to medically monitored detox and residential treatment.

The Outpatient Facility provides primary care screening and monitoring, psychiatric rehabilitation, behavioral health services, transportation assistance, and round-the-clock peer support, among other services.

Additionally, the Detox & Residential Treatment Facility offers interdisciplinary, culturally competent, trauma-informed care, respite care, and peer support. With 34 beds, this facility fills a critical gap by offering a level of care previously unavailable within a four-hour drive of Mobile.

Through its Community Outreach Programs, Vets Recover fosters a community of recovery and connection, supporting the well-being of veterans, first responders, and their families.

According to reports, funding for the project has been secured through city, county, state and federal channels, including a two-year, $4 million grant that designates Vets Recover as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic.
