East Coast transplants rejoice because Wawa’s first Alabama store will open to the public April 25, at 8 a.m.

Wawa got its start in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. In 1902, owner George Wood founded the Wawa Dairy to bottle milk and cream from certified Guernsey cows. The products were delivered to doorsteps throughout the Philadelphia area. Then in 1964, the first Wawa Food Market opened in Folsom, Pennsylvania. Wawa Kitchens served hamburgers and fried chicken. Premade hoagies were introduced in 1972. Over the years the brand added gasoline, new products and expanded on the East Coast.

In June 2023, Wawa broke ground on the first Alabama location in Fairhope. Overall, the brand plans to open seven to 10 stores in the Baldwin County and Mobile markets over the next three to four years.

“We can’t wait to open our doors to our new Alabama friends and neighbors and are excited for the chance to offer our new customers our unique brand of fresh food, beverages and convenience,” said Robert Yeatts, senior director of store operations in a statement. “As each location opens, we will further solidify our commitment to providing the community with not only a new level of convenience but a strong, committed community partner.”

Locals who have either lived on the East Coast or traveled there might be familiar with the Wawa brand. For those that are not, a simple look at Wawa’s website or app will show the options not usually available at a gas station. Wawa is known for its customizable hoagies (or subs), along with a diverse array of menu options including hamburgers, pizza and breakfast items, among others.
