Weeks Bay pitcher plant bog boardwalk, parking area undergoes construction

Posted

The pitcher plant bog boardwalk and its associated parking area are presently closed for an extensive renovation project, with plans for reopening in the summer of 2024.

According to a news release from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the upcoming improvements aim to enhance accessibility and the overall visitor experience.

Funded through a NOAA Procurement, Acquisition and Construction award, along with matching funds from the ADCNR State Lands Division, the renovation project is a significant undertaking. The focal points of the improvements include the reconstruction of 2,000 linear feet of the handicap-accessible boardwalk that winds through the distinctive carnivorous plant bog. Simultaneously, enhancements to the parking area are underway to ensure increased accessibility and convenience for visitors.

While the boardwalk and parking area are temporarily closed, visitors are encouraged to explore alternative options. The Weeks Bay Visitor Center, located at 11300 U.S. Hwy 98 in Fairhope, offers additional boardwalks and trails for nature enthusiasts to enjoy during the renovation period.

The anticipated reopening in the summer of 2024 promises an improved and revitalized site, showcasing the ecological wonders of the pitcher plant bog to a broader audience.
