A five-year-old male child was rescued from the Perdido Pass at approximately 5 p.m. June 14. The incident occurred approximately 300 yards from Lifeguard Tower 2 at Alabama Point East. The child was out of the water by the time lifeguards arrived. Orange Beach Fire Department also responded to the call.

Fire and surf rescue crews worked together to stabilize and transport the child to the Alabama Marine Police office located at the base of the Perdido Pass Bridge where a landing area was secured. Medstar AirCare transported the child to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. The patient was conscious and responsive at the time of transported.

According to Orange Beach Fire Chief Mike Kimmerling, the beaches were under a yellow flag at the time of the incident but the Perdido Pass area is always under a red flag warning due to tidal currents and the drop off that exists in the area.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to check the beach conditions before heading to the beach by calling the Daily Surf/Beach Condition Info line at 251-981-SURF (7873). The recording is updated daily with the current beach conditions, weather, rip current report, water temperature, UV index and tide schedule.

Orange Beach Police, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Police, Gulf State Park Law Enforcement also assisted by securing the landing zone.
