Alabama basketball commit Sims from Fairhope named to 34th Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic

Ninth-ranked prospect in Alabama set to help Yellowhammer State seek another sweep

When 24 of Alabama’s top basketball players were announced to represent the state at the 34th Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic, Fairhope senior Spence Sims was on the roster.

The University of Alabama commit will add to a laundry list of high school accomplishments when the game is played in Mississippi next month. The Yellowhammer State will look to stay on top after it swept the girls’ and boys’ games last year.

The two all-star teams were announced by Brandon Dean, director of the AHSAA’s Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA) on Saturday, Feb. 17. The teams, consisting of 12 boys and 12 girls, were selected from coaches’ nominations by the AHSADCA All-Star Selection Committee.

“Once again our selection committee has completed a very difficult task and has done an outstanding job,” Dean said. “We had an abundance of talent to choose from thanks to our member school coaches who nominated so many deserving players.”

Sims closed his final season with the Pirates averaging 15.4 points and 3.8 assists per game where Fairhope earned its fifth straight Class 7A Area 2 title. Also this season, Sims committed to the University of Alabama, was named a Seacrest Furniture Athlete of the Week as well as nominated for the McDonald’s All-American Game.

Last year as a junior, Sims set the Pirates’ single-game scoring record with a 46-point outburst in a duel against future Mr. Basketball LaBaron Philon. He went on to be named third-team all-state and was also an AHSAA North-South All-Star.

Sims, HoopSeen’s ninth-overall prospect in the state, won’t be the only high-profile recruit on his team at the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. HoopSeen’s top three-rated players, Mountain Brook’s Ty Davis (Creighton), Paul Bryant’s Adrian Wooley (Kennesaw State) and Huntsville’s Caleb Harrison (Samford), are all also committed to Division I programs.

“Alabama swept the series last year with Alabama’s girls beating Mississippi 88-74 to improve to 19-14 in the series,” the Saturday release says. “The boys won 91-72 and now hold an 18-15 in the series, which was first played in Florence at the University of North Alabama in 1991. … The Alabama Boys’ all-star coaches are Patrick Harding of Buckhorn High School and Marshon Harper of Valley High School. Saraland’s Dru Powell is the boys’ administrative coach.”
