Baldwin County residents prepare for 2024 Severe Weather Sales Tax Holiday

Posted

As the threat of severe weather looms, the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is urging all residents and visitors to take proactive measures and capitalize on the upcoming Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday. This initiative allows for the exemption of Baldwin County sales and use tax on certain items crucial for severe weather preparedness.

Beginning on Friday, Feb. 23, and continuing until midnight on Sunday, Feb. 25, shoppers can enjoy exemptions from both county and state sales tax on select items. The tax holiday aims to empower individuals to acquire essential items without the burden of additional taxation during this critical period.

During the Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, eligible items priced at $60 or less per item include various types of batteries (AAA-cell, AA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, 6-volt, and 9-volt), cellular phone batteries and chargers, portable radios (battery or self-powered), flashlights, lanterns, glow sticks, tarpaulin, plastic sheeting, drop cloths, ground anchor systems, duct tape, plywood, window film, non-electric food storage containers, can openers, artificial ice, ice packs, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and gas or diesel fuel tanks or containers. Additionally, single purchases valued at $1,000 or less, including portable generators and power cords used for lighting, communication or food preservation during power outages, are eligible for tax exemption.

However, items such as coin batteries, automobile and boat batteries are not eligible for tax exemption.
