Baldwin Pops awards 3 college scholarships

The Baldwin Pops Band recently named three high school seniors who won 2023 John Allen Memorial Scholarships and an additional two honorable mentions.

The band awards an annual college scholarship in memory of former member John Allen, who began learning how to play tuba at age 76, for high school seniors who are band students from Baldwin County and who plan to continue their musical involvement in college. The students are nominated by their band directors, and they participate in rehearsals and concerts with the Baldwin Pops Band. The winners were announced April 8 at a concert in Daphne.

In total, 11 students from Daphne, Fairhope, Robertsdale and Spanish Fort high school participated this year.

These students were:

  • Ashleigh Kiesel, flute, Daphne High School
  • Kayin Hardy, trombone, Daphne High School
  • Olivia Tures, flute, Daphne High School
  • Ryan Perry, trumpet, Daphne High School
  • Carolyn Lippold, clarinet, Fairhope High School
  • JW Hurley, tuba, Fairhope High School
  • Ryder Wilkins, trumpet, Fairhope High School
  • Dominick Williams, french horn, Robertsdale High School
  • Julia Wofford, clarinet, Robertsdale High School
  • Aubrey Fagan, bass clarinet, Spanish Fort High School
  • Haley Childress, clarinet, Spanish Fort High School

Scholarship winners were:

  • Olivia Tures, first place
  • Carolyn Lippold, second place
  • Kayin Hardy, third place

In addition, Ashleigh Kiesel and Julia Wofford received honorable mentions.

All of these seniors were involved in their high school bands, various university honor bands and Alabama All-State Band. In addition, Olivia Tures, Kayin Hardy and Ashleigh Kiesel were members of the Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra.
