For Baldwin and Mobile commuters accustomed to the convenience of the Bankhead Tunnel, the past week brought unexpected detours and delays as the landmark tunnel underwent vital upgrades. Forced to navigate alternative routes such as the Wallace Tunnel or the Africatown Bridge, many residents eagerly anticipate a return to smoother commutes.

Commuters you are in luck—The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) announced the historic Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile is set to reopen this evening.

In a news release this morning, ALDOT announced the Bankhead Tunnel would reopen by 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, following a week-long closure for essential upgrades. The closure facilitated the installation of a new emergency generator and enhancements to the tunnel's electrical and lighting systems.

However, not long after recieving the news release, Gulf Coast Media received another release stating the Bankhead Tunnel was originally slated to reopen on Friday. Feb. 23, but unforeseen mechanical issues caused a delay.  The tunnel would now be opening on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m.

The revised release further stated that nighttime travelers should anticipate closures of the tunnel from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., starting Sunday, Feb. 25, and extending through Thursday, Feb. 29. Crews will be conducting installation of additional lighting upgrades during these overnight closures.

The Alabama Department of Transportation recommends motorists intending to pass through the tunnel during these hours to consider alternative routes, such as the Wallace Tunnel or the Africatown Bridge. Additionally, drivers can utilize the ALGO Traffic app for up-to-date traffic updates.

Originally opened for traffic in 1941, the Bankhead Tunnel has been undergoing continual electrical improvements, with the new generator representing a significant milestone in the tunnel's modernization efforts.

ALDOT engineers extend their gratitude to the public for their understanding and patience throughout the upgrade process.
